Saturday night and looking for places with live jazz? Free Flight is one of your options.
The music started at 8:30 pm, and was not empty, but not too crowded–just right. Like many other jazz bars, one of the features of Free Flight is that the waiters/bartenders all wear essentially butler outfits, complete with a little black bow-tie. They have a fairly extensive mix of drinks on the menu, and I decided to go for one of the recommended signature cocktails, a cranberry yogurt drink, which in all honestly tasted like Chobani. They also feature a nice mix of food–their recommendations are the beef stew and Korean-style soup–but I went for neither and got a margarita pizza and a 4-cheese pizza. Thanks to Hot Pepper, we also got a coupon for a free “crunchy tuna sashimi salad” (with an order of over ￥3000), which is the right amount of food between two people (maybe one more item if you’re really hungry).
The tuna salad was good (mmmm fried crunchy things), and the pizza wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t too great either. All in all, it’s not a place I’d go to again for food (although maybe next time I’d actually try their recommendations), but if you’re looking for a place to chill alone, on a date, with family, or with friends (really anyone, besides probably murderers) with some live jazz, this is an excellent option. (And I’m saying this as someone who doesn’t even like jazz too much.)
I was also happy with the fairly reasonable prices; the total came out to be only about a bit under ￥2500 each for everything. There was a surprise inside the last jazz bar I went to, where on top of expensive cocktails, we were never told of an exorbitant cover charge because of the live music until it was time to pay, and ended up paying even more than ￥2500 just 2 drinks and existing.
So thumbs up.
