Hananoki Plus has the plus (haha…) of being right next to JR Utsunomiya Station. Which is probably why it’s still open, because it’s really not all that good. (I know two people who say one of their other Hananoki chains up near Romantic Mura is their favorite out of all ramen in town, so apparently different restaurants in the franchise have different qualities/flavors of ramen…?)
It’s my favorite, tonkotsu, but the broth leaves you wanting something more. The menma is awful (again, still going along with my theory–see my other ramen ratings), and the noodles aren’t prepared very well–they’re rather mushy. It’s kind of a lot of nothing.
Their gyoza (pot stickers) are eh–I got the meat ones the first time I tried this place, and as far as I could tell, it was literally only meat. Then I tried the vegetable ones, and they were just ok. A friend I was with once also got some mystery thing they saw a picture of on a flier on the wall, and it turned out to be some sort of pork–the part that’s basically a gelatinous blob, with not much “meat” (the charred part that actually had meat that tasted really good, but that was only about 5% of the total volume).
It’s an easy option, but not a recommendation.
